Supported files and practical limits

*AVIF decoding and WebP export depend on browser support. Total input is limited to 150 MB. Each image may contain up to 24 megapixels with a maximum side of 12,000 px; output is limited to 16 megapixels and 8,192 pixels per side. Animated input becomes one still image. SVG, HEIC/HEIF, TIFF, PSD, PDF and RAW are not accepted.

85 is a balanced starting point. Quality is an encoder instruction, not a universal visual score.

Fit keeps the aspect ratio. Enlargement is off by default.

    THREE SIMPLE STEPS

How to convert an image to WebP

    01

    Add images from your device

Select one image or queue a batch. File signatures are checked to reject unrelated input before conversion.

    02

    Balance quality and dimensions

Start at quality 85, keep the original size or set maximum dimensions. Preserve transparency or choose a background.

    03

    Compare and save

Review dimensions, byte size and percentage change. Download files separately or save every successful WebP in one ZIP.

    MODERN RASTER OUTPUT

    What happens during WebP conversion?

WebP is a web raster format supporting lossy or lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation. This tool creates still WebP output through Canvas with browser-supported quality control.

The source is decoded, optionally resized, rendered onto a canvas and encoded again. Keeping transparency retains alpha pixels; choosing a background paints transparent areas but cannot remove an existing background.

The new file does not intentionally retain EXIF, GPS, comments, colour profiles or editing history. Animated input contributes one still frame. Keep the original when metadata, motion or later editing matters.

    A practical WebP quality guide

Complexity, dimensions, transparency and the browser encoder all affect the final bytes.

    Starting valueGood first testInspect carefully
70Small thumbnails, drafts or image-heavy pages where compact delivery matters.Fine text, faces, gradients, shadows and hard colour boundaries.
85General photographs, product images and routine batch conversion.Compare the real display size and the reported output bytes.
95When subtle detail matters more than aggressive reduction.Confirm the extra bytes produce a visible benefit in the destination.

Quality 100 is not a promise of mathematical losslessness in the browser Canvas API. This page therefore does not label it “lossless.” Use a dedicated encoder when a verified lossless WebP workflow is mandatory.

JPG, PNG, GIF and BMP to WebP

    JPG → WEBP

    Re-encode photographs thoughtfully

A JPG can become a smaller WebP, but the result depends on both encoders and the picture itself. Conversion cannot restore detail already discarded by earlier JPG compression.

    PNG → WEBP

    Keep alpha transparency

Transparent PNG artwork can retain its alpha channel. Because this tool uses quality-controlled browser WebP output rather than a verified lossless mode, inspect sharp text, flat colours and edges before replacing the PNG.

    GIF / BMP → WEBP

    Create an efficient still image

GIF contributes one decoded frame, not an animation. Uncompressed BMP often shrinks substantially, although exact savings depend on dimensions, detail and the quality setting.

Resize without changing the aspect ratio

    Fit keeps both dimensions within your limits. A 3000 × 1500 source fitted inside 1200 × 1200 becomes 1200 × 600 rather than a stretched square.

Upscaling is off by default because extra pixels cannot recover genuine detail. Enable it only when a system requires minimum dimensions, then inspect the result.

A responsive site may need several WebP widths and suitable image markup instead of one oversized file reduced only with CSS.

    Transparency, backgrounds and edge quality

WebP supports alpha transparency, so transparent assets need no forced white rectangle. Keep transparency is the default. A fill can provide a predictable background.

Background selection affects only pixels that are already transparent or partly transparent. It is not an automatic subject cut-out tool. If the original contains an opaque background, remove it in an editor before conversion.

Partly transparent edge pixels blend with the chosen colour when flattened. Choose a fill close to the final page background to reduce visible halos around logos or cut-out artwork.

Local processing, limits and browser support

Images are decoded and encoded in browser memory; this page does not send selected image bytes to a conversion API. Files are handled sequentially to reduce peak work, while progress and stop controls keep a larger batch manageable.

WebP export depends on browser Canvas support. The tool verifies that the returned blob is actually image/webp; if not, it reports an error instead of downloading another format with a false extension.

Large files can still use considerable memory on older phones. Work with smaller batches if the device slows down, and test a representative output in the browser, CMS or application where it will be used.

    Image to WebP questions

Can I convert multiple images at once?

Yes. Add up to 30 supported images within the stated limits. Apply shared settings, choose a different quality preset for individual rows, and download separate files or one ZIP.

    Does WebP preserve transparency?

It can. Keep transparency leaves existing alpha pixels available in the output. White or custom colour deliberately flattens those pixels. The tool does not remove an opaque background.

    Is quality 100 lossless WebP?

Not necessarily. Browser Canvas exposes a quality value but not a verified lossless-mode switch. This page avoids making a lossless claim that the browser API cannot guarantee.

    Will every WebP be smaller?

No. Output depends on the source, dimensions, image detail, transparency and quality. The result row reports the actual size and percentage difference so you can decide.

    Are images uploaded?

No conversion upload is performed. Files are processed with local browser APIs after the page code loads. Continue following your own rules for sensitive material.
