GIF Compressor
Reduce animated GIF file size with practical controls for frames, colors, dimensions and duplicate-frame cleanup. Processing happens locally in your browser.

For a large animated GIF, reducing width and frame count usually has a stronger effect on file size than changing colors alone.
Compress GIFs with animation-aware controls
GIF compression is different from compressing a single still image. File size depends on the number of frames, how much each frame changes, palette size and canvas dimensions.
Reduce frame data
Drop selected frames or remove similar consecutive frames when smoothness allows a smaller animation.
Control the palette
Choose a maximum color count to trade some color precision for a potentially smaller indexed GIF.
Resize safely
Set a maximum width while preserving the original aspect ratio so large GIFs do not carry unnecessary pixels.
Four steps from GIF to optimized GIF
The workflow stays simple while the processing handles animation-specific details.
Add GIFs
Drop one or several animated GIF files into the tool.
Choose controls
Select a preset or tune frames, colors, width, dithering and looping.
Rebuild frames
The browser decodes frames, applies the selected optimizations and encodes a new GIF.
Compare and download
Check the original and output sizes, then download the optimized GIF.
Settings that make the biggest difference
Start with the balanced preset, then adjust the setting that matches your GIF rather than pushing every option at once.
Large dimensions
If the GIF is wider than you need, reducing width can lower the amount of pixel data in every frame.
High frame rate
Dropping every second or third frame can shrink animations created from high-FPS video, with a trade-off in motion smoothness.
Simple graphics
Lowering the palette works particularly well for flat-color icons, screen captures and illustrations with limited colors.
GIF Compressor FAQs
Clear answers about frames, colors, transparency, resizing and browser processing.
Can I compress GIFs in my browser?
Yes. This tool reads and processes GIF frames locally in a supported browser without sending the source GIF to a GetTransfy conversion server.
Can I compress an animated GIF without changing its format?
Yes. The output remains an animated GIF and preserves frame timing and looping information where the source provides it.
What does frame dropping do?
Frame dropping removes selected animation frames. It can substantially reduce file size, but too much frame removal can make motion look less smooth.
What are duplicate frames?
Duplicate frames are frames whose pixels are the same or extremely similar to a nearby frame. Removing them can reduce redundant GIF data.
Why does reducing colors make a GIF smaller?
GIF uses indexed colors with a maximum of 256 colors per frame. A smaller palette can reduce image data and may lower the final file size.
Will reducing colors lower GIF quality?
It can. Fewer colors may introduce banding or color shifts, especially in gradients. Higher color settings preserve more color detail.
Can I resize a GIF while compressing it?
Yes. You can set a maximum width and the tool keeps the animation's aspect ratio while rendering the compressed frames.
Does the compressor preserve transparency?
The compressor keeps transparent pixels when the source GIF contains transparency, subject to GIF palette and rendering limitations.
Can compression make my GIF larger?
Yes, especially when a GIF is already highly optimized. The tool compares the generated result with the original and keeps the original when the optimized file is larger.
Why can a GIF still be large after compression?
Animated GIF size depends on dimensions, frame count, frame changes, color data and timing. Lowering width or frame count often has a larger effect than small palette changes.
