Tip: start with Best Balance. Lower color counts can reduce file size further, but may introduce banding in gradients.
Smaller PNGs without leaving your browser
PNG is useful for transparency, logos, icons and interface graphics, but large files can add unnecessary page weight. This tool gives you practical controls for reducing palette size and, when needed, image dimensions.
Transparency friendly
The generated indexed PNG includes palette transparency information, so transparent artwork can remain transparent.
Palette-based reduction
Choose a color budget instead of relying on a generic quality slider. This is useful for logos, icons and simple graphics.
Optional resizing
Large dimensions can dominate file size. Set a maximum width when you need a smaller image as well as a smaller file.
Four simple steps
No account or complicated workflow is required.
Add PNGs
Drop one or several PNG images into the compressor.
Choose a target
Select a preset or adjust colors, width and dithering.
Compress locally
The browser reads the pixels, creates a reduced palette and writes a new PNG.
Download results
Review the original and output sizes, then download each file.
Choose settings for the image you have
PNG compression is not one-size-fits-all. Graphics with flat colors usually tolerate palette reduction better than photographs or smooth gradients.
256 colors
A strong starting point for logos, screenshots, UI graphics and illustrations where color fidelity matters.
64–128 colors
Useful when the artwork has a limited palette and you want a more aggressive reduction.
16–32 colors
Best reserved for simple icons, basic shapes and graphics that do not rely on subtle gradients.
PNG Compressor FAQs
Clear answers about color reduction, transparency, dimensions and browser processing.
Can I compress PNG images without uploading them?
Yes. GetTransfy processes PNG images in the browser, so the compression workflow can run locally on your device.
Does PNG compression reduce image dimensions?
Not by default. You can optionally choose a maximum width, which reduces dimensions while preserving the aspect ratio.
Will PNG compression keep transparency?
Yes. The indexed PNG output includes transparency information, so transparent graphics can remain transparent.
What does the color count setting do?
It controls the maximum number of palette colors used by the compressed PNG. Fewer colors can produce smaller files but may introduce visible color changes.
Is 256 colors always the best PNG setting?
No. 256 colors is a useful starting point for many graphics, while simpler icons may tolerate fewer colors. Photos and gradients usually need more colors.
Can I compress multiple PNG files at once?
Yes. You can add multiple PNG files, apply the selected settings, and download each compressed result separately.
Does the compressor remove PNG metadata?
The browser-generated PNG output is rebuilt from pixel data, which removes metadata that was not reproduced in the new file.
Can compression make a PNG larger?
It can happen with some already-optimized or unusual PNGs. The tool compares the generated file with the original and keeps the smaller result.
Will PNG compression reduce quality?
Palette reduction can change colors, especially at low color counts. The higher-color presets preserve more visual detail.
What is the difference between PNG compression and converting to WebP?
PNG compression keeps PNG as the output format. WebP is a different image format and can often achieve smaller files, but it may not be suitable where PNG compatibility or specific transparency workflows are required.
